Academic Awards Information

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Guardians and Community:

As you know, at Creighton Middle School, we highly value learning and student achievement. We continuously examine our grading practices to ensure we accurately and fairly report what students know and can achieve in the classroom. We use multiple ways to assess learning, including both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments (classwork, homework, some quizzes, participation, etc.) are used as tools for teachers and students to measure students’ learning in relation to the standards of the course as well as the objectives of the unit and/or lesson. The summative assessments, therefore, measure the learning of that content once that unit is complete.

That being said, at Creighton Middle School, we recognize our students that go above and beyond academically; and although our Academic Awards Night isn’t until May 17th, 2018, we wanted to share with you how academic awards will be determined for this school year. Based on community feedback, we have made a few changes.

Bronze Medal:

7th or 8th grade student

Met or exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 3.0 or higher grade point average for work habit and content grades both semesters during the 2017-18 school year.

Silver Medal:

7th or 8th grade student

Met or exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 3.4 or higher grade point average for work habit and content grades both semesters during the 2017-18 school year.

Gold Medal:

7th or 8th grade student

Exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 4.0 grade point average for work habit and content grades both semesters during the 2017-18 school year.

Platinum Medal:

8th grade student

Exceeded standards and expectations by earning straight A’s for work habit and content grades for the past FOUR semesters.

The Creighton Middle School Grade Reporting System is a traditional A/B/C/D/F  scale.

The scale uses 10% increments, where 100%-90% is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, and anything below 60% is failing (F).

While students’ letter grades are determined from the grade percentage, the GPA is calculated from the letter grade (A=4 pts, B=3pts, C=2pts, D=1pts, and F=0pts). A student with all As has a 4.0 Grade Point Average.  A student with two As, two Bs, and two Cs would have a 3.0 GPA.

The Academic Awards Night is an opportunity for us to gather together and celebrate those students who have shown excellence academically at Creighton Middle School.  We look forward to this night and hope this information serves to help your student achieve his or her academic goals.
