Dress Code

The Creighton Middle School (CMS) dress code articulates what students are expected to wear on school property — as a representation of what it truly means to be part of the Creighton community. The school’s goal is for all students to feel comfortable in their bodies and the school building. They are strongly encouraged to choose clothing appropriate for a school environment.

The CMS community fosters diversity, equity and inclusion. To maintain every student’s right to learn and safety in school, this dress code makes every effort to remove all bias based on gender, sex, ability, body type, race or religion.

Students Must At Least Wear the Following at All Times

  1. A shirt: Any garment with straps that covers the entire torso, including one’s back
  2. Bottoms: Pants or the equivalent (jeans, sweatpants, skirts, leggings, dresses or shorts) worn at the waistline
  3. Shoes: Footwear appropriate for school activities

Note: Clothing must cover all private body areas with non-transparent material.

Students May Wear

  • Athletic attire
  • Ripped jeans as long as underwear and buttocks are not exposed
  • Religious headwear
  • Headbands, hats, hooded sweatshirts and hair accessories that keep the face visible
  • Specialized attire, such as uniforms or safety gear, required by the course a student is enrolled in

Students May Not Wear

  • Trench coats
  • Clothing containing images or language depicting or suggesting:
    • Drugs or alcohol
    • Violent language or images
    • Vaping or other paraphernalia (of any illegal item or activity)
    • Hate speech or anything perpetuating discriminatory ideas based on race, sex, religion, ability or sexuality, etc.
    • Creation of a hostile or intimidating environment based on any community group or social class
    • Profanity
    • Pornography
  • Clothing or headwear containing gang identifiers per Jeffco Board Policy JICA
  • Accessories that could be considered dangerous or used as a weapon
  • Blankets
  • Swimsuits

Guidelines

  • Clothing and footwear must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities, including physical education, science labs and other activities where unique hazards exist.
  • If the student’s attire threatens the health or safety of any other person, then discipline for their violation will be consistent with policies for similar infractions.
  • There will be no discrimination based on a student’s clothing as long as they do not violate the dress code.
  • Clothing requirements and dress codes for participation in sports must be upheld.

Adherence Process

The dress code enforcement process should not call undue attention to the student or the teacher.

  • Students will be offered these options to adhere to the dress code for the remainder of the day:
    • Students will be asked to change into their own alternative clothing, if already available at school.
    • Students will be provided temporary and dignified school clothing.
    • Students’ parents may be called during the school day to bring alternative clothing, if necessary.
  • The adherence process ensures a student will not be affected by the dress code because of their racial identity, sex assigned at birth, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, cultural or religious identity, household income, body size or type or body maturity.

Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco

Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.

Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
