Academic Awards Information

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Guardians and Community:

Creighton Middle School highly values learning and student achievement. We continuously examine our grading practices to ensure that we accurately and fairly report what students know and can achieve in the classroom. We use multiple ways to assess learning, including both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments (classwork, homework, some quizzes, participation, etc.) are used as tools for teachers and students to measure students’ learning in relation to the standards of the course as well as the objectives of the unit and/or lesson. The summative assessments, therefore, measure the learning of that content once that unit is complete.

That being said, at Creighton Middle School, we recognize our students that go above and beyond academically;  we wanted to share with you how academic awards are determined beginning in the 2023-24 school year.

Bronze Medal:

6th, 7th or 8th grade student

Met or exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 3.4 or higher grade point average for content grades both semesters.

Silver Medal:

6th, 7th or 8th grade student

Met or exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 3.7 or higher grade point average for content grades both semesters.

Gold Medal:

6th, 7th or 8th grade student

Exceeded standards and expectations by earning a 4.0 grade point average for content grades for both semesters.

Platinum Medal:

8th grade students only

This award is given to the top 5 percent of 8th grade students as determined by cumulative rolling GPA.  Grades on student transcripts are used for determination of GPA.

Typically this means that students have received all A grades for all classes for six semesters.  To be eligible, students must have attended all six semesters at Creighton Middle.

Creighton Middle School uses a traditional A/B/C/D/F scale.  The scale uses 10% increments, where 100%-90% is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, and anything below 60% is failing (F).

While students’ letter grades are determined from the grade percentage, the GPA is calculated from the letter grade (A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 point, and F=0 points). A student with all As has a 4.0 Grade Point Average.  A student with two As, two Bs, and two Cs would have a 3.0 GPA.  All GPA calculations are unweighted, meaning that all courses carry the same weight in terms of calculating the GPA.

The Academic Awards are an opportunity for us celebrate those students who have shown excellence academically at Creighton Middle School.  We hope this information serves to help your student achieve his or her academic goals.
